James Donahoe, better known as John Bull, was a private detective with a shady reputation. He had a habit of getting himself into legally ambiguous situations and when caught claiming he was investigating on the side of the law. Donahoe was brought to trial for abetting the embezzlement of $10,000 from the city treasury, fencing stolen jewelry, and attempting to procure fraudulent bail. In each case he was able to sow enough doubt to beat the rap.
