Wicked Victorian Boston

Annie Taber

Alleged Adulteress.

Mrs. Annie Taber, here testifying in her divorce trial, had previously been arrested for adultery with Reverend William Downs of the Bowdoin Square Baptist Church. Her husband, Fred Taber (inset), sued for divorce and she countersued, accusing Fred of adultery with Minnie Davidson, another parishioner. The sensational trial filled the courtroom to overflowing with spectators and added to the growing belief that Boston was losing its ancestral claim to the moral high ground.
